Step 13.27 — Full G28

Step 27 of 54 · Chapter 13 — Initial startup

(no image — see text)

Parts: none.

Do:

  1. M112 typed and unsent, someone watching the nozzle.
  2. Send G28: X right, Y back, then a slow descent onto the nozzle probe at the [safe_z_home] coordinate.
  3. Stop the descent with M112 if the nozzle will miss the shaft.

check Check

Z homes on the probe: first touch at homing_speed: 8, 3 mm retract, second touch at 3 mm/s, nozzle pressing the shaft, not the printed body.

What you're looking at

The full sequence: X to its switch, Y to its switch, then a move to the coordinate you just recorded and a slow two-touch descent onto the nozzle probe. The stock position_endstop: -0.5 deliberately leaves the nozzle high.

Caution

The Z homing move only ends when the switch trips. Beside the pin there is nothing to trip it: the move runs on to position_min: -5 and drives the nozzle into whatever is under it.

tip Tip

the stock [stepper_z] position_endstop: -0.5 leaves the nozzle deliberately high, a safe placeholder that Step 13.36 replaces. Do not send the nozzle to Z0 yet.

pause Good stopping point · ~30 min since the last one

homing works. X, Y and Z home, the bed is located, 0,0 is defined and the [safe_z_home] coordinate is written into printer.cfg, and a full G28 completes without a crash. Klipper came back clean after the edits (commit them: cd ~/printer_data/config && git add -A && git commit -m "13.26 safe_z_home"). This is the biggest milestone in the chapter — a good place to stop.
