Step 00.15 — Learn what a good insert looks like¶
Step 15 of 32 pre-kit · Chapter 00 — Before you start
(no image — see text)
Parts:
- the
Heatset_Practicecoupon and its seven inserts · already on the bench - soldering iron · tool
- flat cold tool, for the last 10 % · tool
Do:
- Push each insert 90 % in with the iron, then press the last 10 % home with a flat cold tool.
- Check squareness by eye from two directions.
- Nudge a tilted insert briefly with the iron.
Check
Seven inserts flush to ≤ 0.2 mm proud, square, with no boss bulged more than 0.2 mm.
What you're looking at
The seven inserts you just set, one per pocket of the practice coupon. A good one is flush with the surface, square to it, and has not made the plastic boss around it swell. A swollen boss will not fit its neighbour.
Caution
A bulged boss is a technique fault, too hot or pushed too fast, never a slicer fault. On a real part with a free-standing boss, caliper the boss OD before and after; on the coupon the raised ring is the tell. src · print plan §1.4
