Ch 10 › Section 2 — Checkpoint #1, exactly as LDO writes it23 / 80

Step 10.23 — First power-on, then off again

Step 23 of 80 · Chapter 10 — Wiring and Checkpoint #1

(no image — see text)

Parts:

  • C13 power cord ×1 · Other box

Do:

  1. Printer upright. Rocker OFF, meter away; cord into inlet, then wall.
  2. Everyone back; stand aside, hand on the rocker, switch ON. Look, listen, smell ten seconds.
  3. Rocker OFF, unplug wall then inlet, cord out of the room.

Check

All three observations during the ten seconds.

What you're looking at

The only moment in this chapter when mains is present. The rocker lamp and the PSU's indicator LED are the two observations that say the mains half works; ten seconds of looking, listening and smelling is the whole test. Nothing is measured live.

Observe Expected
Inlet rocker illuminates
PSU indicator LED lights green, seen from beside the machine (verify on bench)
Noise / smell none. Any buzz, click-cycling or smell → rocker OFF, then pull the plug at the wall

Everything from here to the end of the chapter is done dead.

Caution

Who is in the room, 00a.2: one adult, standing to the side, hand on the switch. Nobody else within reach of the machine; she is out of the room.

Caution

Rev D+ / LDO: this is the only power-on in the chapter. The Leviathan, Pi and toolboard are all still unpowered — the PSU's DC terminals are empty. Never meter a live block: the PSU's +V/−V screws share an uncovered block with live N and L. Keep your free hand behind your back. src

Good stopping point · ~25 min since the last one

Checkpoint #1 passed end to end and the machine was powered once and switched off. Cord unplugged and back out of the room. Everything from here is done dead; lay the printer back on its side, bay towards you, for Section 3.
