Step 14.19 — Extrusion multiplier / flow: the 2 % pass

Step 19 of 36 · Chapter 14 — Calibration and tuning

(no image — see text)

Gather for this segment — steps 14.19–14.20 (~25 min)

Tools and consumables

  • Prusament ASA, about 25 g ×2

Parts:

  • Prusament ASA, about 25 g · consumable

Do:

  1. Print Ellis' 30 × 30 × 3 mm test cubes in a row at 92, 94, 96, 98 % flow.
  2. Slice at top-layer line width 100 %, infill 30 %+, top solid infill speed ~60 mm/s, normal fan.

Check

Judged on the centre of each top surface, one cube has no gaps between the top lines and no ridging.

What you're looking at

Extrusion multiplier is a straight percentage scaling of how much plastic comes out. It is judged on the centre of a top surface: too little leaves visible valleys between the lines, too much leaves ridges. The edges always look over-extruded and prove nothing.

Extrusion multiplier — the 2 % pass — the calculator needs JavaScript; the limits are in the table on this page.

Caution

Too low leaves visible gaps and valleys between the top lines when held toward a light; too high leaves pellets, ridging and a rough raised surface. Most filaments land in the 92–98 % window, and Prusament ASA should.

Tip

the cubes are in Ellis' test_prints folder. In PrusaSlicer, right-click each object → add settings → Extrusion multiplier to vary them on one plate.
