Step 00.13 — Fit the brass tip and set the tongue flush

Step 13 of 32 · Chapter 00 — Before you start

Parts:

  • LDO brass M3 heat-set tip · tool
  • soldering iron, cold · tool
  • one M3×5×4 kit insert as the tongue gauge, back in tray C after · tool

Do:

  1. Iron off and cold: sleeve off, stock tip out, LDO tip in, sleeve on.
  2. Hold an insert alongside the tip and move the two knurled nuts until the exposed tongue length equals the insert height.

Check

With an insert on the tongue, the tongue tip and the insert's far face are level.

What you're looking at

The LDO brass tip, and the same tip set against an insert. The four-panel photo is the tip going into the iron: sleeve off, stock tip out, LDO tip in, sleeve on. The tongue is the thin pin that goes inside the insert.

Kit day only

the LDO tip comes in the kit. Steps 00.14–00.15 ran months earlier at Gate B, on the iron's stock conical tip. The gauge insert goes back in tray C, and Ch 02 re-checks the temperature on this tip.

Tip

the adjustment nuts on LDO's own tool are themselves brass inserts. src

Good stopping point · ~35 min since the last one

kit day: the fastener bags are emptied into trays A–C and the trays are stacked, the LDO tip is in the iron with its tongue set flush, the iron is off and cooling, and the gauge insert is back in tray C. Steps 00.14–00.16 ran months ago at Gate B, so the next kit-day work is rail prep at Step 00.17.
