Step 00.20 — Clean the rail surface back to bare steel¶
Step 20 of 32 with a helper · Chapter 00 — Before you start
(no image — see text)
Parts:
- one greased rail · set out now, fitted later
- lint-free cloth · consumable
-
MGN12_rail_guide_x2×2 · bin 00-jigs -
MGN9_rail_guide_x2×2 · bin 00-jigs - C extrusion ×1, for the guide test · set out now, fitted later
Do:
- Stroke the carriage stop to stop to spread grease inside.
- Wipe every trace of grease off the rail's outside.
- Clip each guide over its rail on the spare C extrusion, locating with light finger pressure.
Check
The rail is visibly clean and dry, the carriage slides smoothly and silently, and both guide sizes locate with light finger pressure, logged.
Helper Clips each rail guide over the rail and says whether it seats with light finger pressure.
What you're looking at
The greased rail and a cloth. Grease belongs inside the carriage; the polished outer faces of the rail are a running surface, and any film left there collects dust and hair and feeds it into the bearings.
Caution
A guide that will not seat now, with Gate A and Gate B both passed, is more likely a burr on the extrusion or a string in the guide than the profile. Clean it and retry before you blame the slicer.
